Monte Carlo calculation of the radiation field at aircraft altitudes.
Energy spectra of secondary cosmic rays are calculated for aircraft altitudes and a discrete set of solar modulation parameters and rigidity cut-off values covering all possible conditions. The calculations are based on the Monte Carlo code FLUKA and on the most recent information on the interstellar cosmic ray flux including a detailed model of solar modulation. Results are compared to a large...
متن کاملDilution of Aircraft Exhaust Plumes at Cruise Altitudes
The dilution of jet engine exhaust in the plume behind cruising aircraft is determined from measured plume properties. The data set includes in situ measurements of CO 2 , NO, NO y , SO 2 , H 2 O, temperature, and contrail diameters behind subsonic and supersonic aircraft in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, for plume ages of seconds to hours. The set of data is extended into the ra...
متن کاملCosmic Ray Abundance at Aircraft Altitudes in the Earth’s Atmosphere
Recent investigations of cosmic ray primaries and secondaries at aviation altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere include the study of Z≥2 particles along the London-New York flight routes on supersonic aircraft. Preliminary charge spectra will be presented for these nuclei and comparisons will be made with the predictions of cosmic ray transport models in the Earth’s atmosphere.
متن کاملPulmonary circulation of the llama at high and low altitudes.
We have studied the pulmonary circulation of three closely related animals, the llama, alpaca, and guanaco. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure of 12 llamas and one alpaca indigenous to high altitude in the Andes was found to be slightly but significantly higher than that of three llamas and three guanacos born and bred at low altitude in England. On the other hand, the medial thickness of the...
متن کاملRespiration at High Altitudes *
It has been clearly recognized that a low barometric pressure, when first encountered, may interfere with the normal workings of the human machine, but that later by compensatory responses the body may become adapted to the new conditions. The outstanding variable encountered in ascents to high altitudes by airplane, dirigible, free balloon, or mountaineering is the tenuousness of the atmospher...
